The Technicolor Foundation, along with the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and the Cinémathèque française created “Pune Film Treasures Festival” in 2008, a special movie programming entirely dedicated to worldwide film heritage. This festival is an initiative organized in parallel of the “Film Heritage Educational Program”.
“Cinema of Modernity and Modernity of Cinema” was the thematic of this year and referring to Jean-François Rauger, Director of Programming (Cinémathèque française):
“The conservation of cinema heritage is a modern concept. During the 30’s, when pioneers of film archives realized the importance of saving films and decided to create film museums, they did it on behalf of an avant-garde instinct: viewing cinema, a major representation of popular entertainment, as a 20th Century art form. Herein lies the modernity of cinema. However, what we call modern cinema – the assumption of breaking with classical rules – could only arise from a vivid knowledge of history and film heritage. Therefore, it is the conservation and projection of essential works of film heritage that provides for the future and for the transformation of art itself into what we call cinema of modernity.”
Evening screenings took place at the main theater of NFAI and were open to public. The movies were introduced each night by different filmmakers and cinema specialists.
